Mile 22 of the Houston Marathon is where the race stops being about fitness and starts being about fluid. The same is true at Ironman Texas in The Woodlands, at hour three of a CrossFit competition, and on the back nine in August. Hard efforts in Gulf Coast humidity can cost you two to three pounds of sweat an hour, and a bottle at the finish line puts it back slowly.

A recovery IV brings a liter of fluids, electrolytes, and recovery nutrients to wherever you are after the cooldown, set up and monitored by an experienced medical professional.

Signs your body needs more than a shaker bottle

  • Legs that still ache three days after the race
  • Cramping mid-round, mid-workout, or mid-tournament
  • Headache and fog after long efforts in the heat
  • A heavy training block where every session feels flatter than the last
  • Down two or more pounds after a workout, and it is all water
  • A tournament weekend with games both mornings, including for the parents on the sideline in the sun

Know the line: Heat stroke is not a recovery problem. Confusion, stumbling, hot dry skin, or a spiking temperature during exercise means calling 911, not booking an IV. We spent our careers answering those calls, so please take this one seriously.

How an IV helps athletes recover

Recovery runs on fluids, fuel, and repair. An IV cannot do the sleeping or the eating for you, but it rehydrates faster than drinking can: fluids and electrolytes go straight to your bloodstream while your gut, which slows down during hard exercise, gets a break.

Amino acids support the repair process, B vitamins support energy for the next session, and taurine and magnesium may help with cramping. Most IVs run 30 to 60 minutes, and your provider stays the whole time. It is a tool, not magic, and many clients simply feel less wrecked the next morning.

Questions about recovery IVs

Should I get the IV before or after my race?

After is the classic use, to replace what the race took. Some athletes book a hydration IV the day before a hot-weather event so they start topped off. Tell us your event schedule when you book, and we will time the visit sensibly.

Can you do a whole team or training group?

Yes. Each person chooses their own IV, and groups of 4 or more can ask about our group discounts. For large groups, we bring additional providers so the whole group infuses at once.

Is a recovery IV allowed for competitive athletes?

For most amateur events, yes. WADA rules restrict IV infusions over 100 mL in a 12-hour period for athletes in drug-tested competition, unless they have an exemption. If you compete under testing, check your federation's rules before you book. We would rather talk you out of an IV than cause you a violation.

How is this different from a sports drink?

Sports drinks work through your gut, which absorbs slowly right after hard exercise. An IV delivers fluids, electrolytes, and nutrients directly to your bloodstream. For everyday workouts, the bottle is fine. For the big efforts, the difference is real.
