Houston has some of the best food in Texas, and every so often a meal fights back. When you cannot keep down a sip of water and you are losing fluid faster than you can replace it, an IV is the right tool. When your stomach is not cooperating, we go around it.

An experienced medical professional comes to your home, office, or hotel, daily 8 AM to 8 PM, and stays with you for the whole infusion.

Signs food poisoning is dehydrating you

  • Vomiting or diarrhea that keeps coming hours after the meal
  • Water comes back up within minutes
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness when you stand
  • Dry mouth, dark urine, or very little urine
  • Cramping and weakness that get worse as the day goes on
  • Work, a flight, or your kids are waiting on you tomorrow

Go to the ER instead if: You see blood in your vomit or stool, your fever is high and climbing, or your abdominal pain is severe and in one spot. Those can signal something more serious than a bad meal, and they need a physician, not a house call. We will tell you this on the phone if we hear it.

How an IV helps with food poisoning

Drinking fluids depends on your stomach cooperating, and right now it is not. Every sip that comes back up is fluid lost twice. An IV bypasses the gut completely: a liter of fluids and electrolytes goes directly into your bloodstream, with nothing to swallow and nothing to keep down.

Under physician medical direction, your IV can also include Zofran for nausea and Pepcid to settle your stomach, so that when the infusion is done you may be able to keep down crackers and fluids on your own. Your provider continuously monitors the infusion until completion.

Questions about IVs for food poisoning

Why will drinking water not fix it?

Because the water has to get past your stomach first, and right now your stomach is rejecting everything. Vomiting and diarrhea can cost you fluid faster than sipping replaces it. An IV delivers fluids straight into your bloodstream.

Do your IVs include anti-nausea medication?

The Kitchen Sink ($395) includes Zofran and Pepcid. For other IVs, mention your symptoms when you book, and your provider will confirm what is appropriate at your health screening.

How long until I feel better?

Many clients feel the nausea ease during the infusion, and the dizziness and weakness improve as the fluids go in. Most IVs run 30 to 60 minutes. Take it easy afterward and bring food back slowly: the IV restores your fluids, and your stomach needs a day to recover.

Should I go to the ER instead?

Sometimes, yes. Blood in vomit or stool, a high fever, severe pain in one spot, or signs of severe dehydration such as confusion or fainting all mean emergency care. We are first responders, and if you describe something that needs a hospital, we will say so.
